About

Soul Rift™ is a Dreamseed.com original sci-fi thriller audio series. In the mid 21st-century, new scientific discoveries for the parallel existence of quantum echoes of the dead has prompted Congress and the Supreme Court to form the experimental Department of Ontological Criminology Investigation (OCI) in Washington D.C. to protect the living from what are better known as ghosts. Detective Alice Walker and her fallen partner, a former Special Inspector nicknamed "Spectre" in death, now together serve, protect, and enforce law through this mysterious layer of existence.

Characters

Principle Characters

Spectre

SPECTRE (Xander Davis) - One of the original members of the OCI, Special Inspector (nicknamed "Spectre") Warren Granger had the highest success rate for the arrest of bio-ethereal entities or "ghosts." For reasons unknown, Granger committed suicide out of despair. Henceforth, he became, like all the ghosts he chased in life, trapped co-existing in the material world. In spirit form, Granger at first was rampant, like most ghosts. The OCI found and captured his spirit, normalizing it to a point of stability. Granger, alone in his new state of existence, pledged himself and became the first ghost officer of the OCI. He fully embodied his nickname "Spectre," hiding his true identity from public knowledge. As Spectre is a weak ghost, he rarely uses force against his enemies. Instead he quietly spies on them and uses his words and logic to drive them to confession and turn against each other.

Alice

DETECTIVE ALICE WALKER (Laura Post) - Detective Alice Walker was recently recruited into the OCI and partnered specifically with Spectre. She is new to the mysterious job of arresting ghosts. An atheist and disbeliever in the supernatural, Walker only accepts the presence of ghosts, based on the controversial and sketchy scientific evidence at hand. Walker is very smart and often can come to conclusions based on evidence by herself. She and Spectre are equal when it comes to who leads each investigation, although most of the time she takes point on cases.

Julian

DR. JULIAN WORSLEY (David Ault) - Dr. Julian M. Worsley is a brilliant quantum physicist from the United Kingdom who first scientifically proved the existence of post-mortem bio-ethereal energy, casually called "ghosts," trapped in a juxtaposed state of reality, which he coined as "the Crossroad." He made this discovery while working in the United States on a U.S. government research grant. The original intent of his R&D project (to listen to parallel realities of Earth juxtaposed over our own) failed, and the revolutionary discovery of "ghosts" and "the Crossroad" was by complete accident. Nevertheless, he was smart enough to realize what he and his team discovered. He has been hired and put on staff with the OCI in Washington D.C. to develop and maintain quantum mechanics ghost-interface equipment, including the storage system that holds all arrested "souls" imprisoned.

Marcus

CHIEF MARCUS HERRINGTON (Jim Barbour) - The Chief of the OCI experimental department in Washington D.C. is Marcus C. Herrington, a man of vast experience from the FBI. A pragmatic man placed into the highest position at the OCI, he often finds himself fighting more bureaucracy than criminal ghosts. However, he always oversees major OCI cases, working often with Detective Alice Walker and Spectre.

Guest Characters

  • ARGES (Shelby Putt) - Arges is the artificial intelligence unit controlling all OCI systems.

  • OSIRIS (Keaton Wooden) - The "mob boss" to a forming criminal underworld of the dead, Osiris seduces hopeless or masochistic people into "the ultimate rush" of death, only to enslave them when trapped at "the Crossroad." He claims to be the same Osiris from Ancient Egyptian mythology, a ghost ten thousand years old or more that convinced the ancient Egyptians that he was a god. Osiris is an extremely powerful poltergeist, and over the millennia, he has learned nearly every language in existence.

  • FEVER (Keaton Wooden) - Rufus D. Clay goes by the name "Fever" and works as a bouncer to the Black Omen Club, a secretive and highly exclusive S&M nightclub in Washington D.C. The OCI first meets him when investigating a murder at the club, suspecting his involvement.

  • SHARON EMMERSON (Tara Branham) - Sharon Emmerson was a private member of the Black Omen Club in Washington D.C., where she became involved with a secret sub-club there in the basement under the leadership of the legendary ghost Osiris.

  • NEW ALEXANDRIA

As of the 2050 census, New Alexandria had a total population of 2 million people. It is located on the west bank of the Potomac River, six miles south of downtown Washington D.C. The city, emerging from what was previously known as Alexandria, experienced rapid growth and urbanization during the 30's and 40's after the third Baby Boomer era of the 20's and early 30's. Because of its recent development, it is considered one of the most technologically advanced cities in the nation and has become an extension of Washington D.C., which was why the city was renamed to New Alexandria. The historical district known as Old Town has been expanded to most of Alexandria's urban existence up to the late 30's, with New Alexandria built over and around it. The OCI Headquarters is based in downtown New Alexandria, because the city is now part of the District of Columbia again.

  • WASHINGTON D.C.

Not much has changed in Washington D.C. due to the extreme historical importance of numerous buildings and the restriction of skyscrapers.

Misc

Electronic Voice Phenomenon & The Many Worlds Theory

  • Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) are sections of static noise on the radio or electronic recording media that are interpreted by paranormal investigators as voices speaking words usually attributed to ghosts or spirits. Recording EVP has become a technique of those who attempt to contact the souls of dead loved ones or during ghost hunting activities. In addition to deceased spirits, various paranormal investigators say that EVP could be due to psychic echoes from the past, psychokinesis unconsciously produced by living people, and the thoughts of aliens. However, Doctor Julian Worsley discovered that EVP was actually the detection of voices from parallel realities overlapping our own, based on the quantum physics Many Worlds Theory. So, the "dead" are not actually dead, but continuations of people in other parallel universes co-existing with the relative universe, at a La Grange Point between realities. Dr. Worsley has named this point "the Crossroad." These parallel continuations are confused by the death of their relative counterpart, and thus believe they are indeed dead. In reality, their waveform has not yet collapsed, or "transcended." Whether transcending leads to an afterlife or simply to a peaceful end remains unknown.

  • The Many Worlds Theory (also known as relative state formulation, theory of the universal wavefunction, parallel universes, many-universes interpretation or many worlds), is an interpretation of quantum mechanics. Many-worlds denies the objective reality of wavefunction collapse, instead explaining the subjective appearance of wavefunction collapse with the mechanism of quantum decoherence. Many-worlds claims to resolve all the "paradoxes" of quantum theory since every possible outcome to every event defines or exists in its own "history" or "world". In layman's terms, this means that, in some sense, there is a very large, perhaps infinite, number of universes and that everything that could possibly happen in our universe (but doesn't) does happen in another universe.

The detection of these parallel universes can be achieved within the relative universe, such as the photon double-slit experiment. Doctor Julian Worsley discovered a way to listen and communicate with these overlapping realities through the discipline of electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) and his proprietary quantum decoherence measuring and interpreting inventions.

Ghost Classes

  • Class-1: Fader - A Class-1 ghost is a bio-ethereal energy pattern stuck in the Crossroad, so faint that it can barely manifest itself.

  • Class-2: Phantom - Phantoms are bio-ethereal energy patterns who have only partially manifested themselves.

  • Class-3: Geist - Geists are an abbreviation for poltergeist, so as to suggest a diminished power capacity compared to Class-4 entities. Spectre is a Class-3 Geist.

  • Class-4: Poltergeist - A poltergeist can easily manipulate the material world by force. They can also manipulate the living and extract their own bio ethereal pattern from their bodies.

  • Class-5: Avatar Geist - An Avatar Geist takes possession of another living person to carry out its will in the material world. These bio ethereal patterns are rare and considered extremely dangerous.

Equipment

  • THE AGV - The AGV (anti-gravity vehicle) is a sci-fi SUV of sorts, which can transport OCI personnel to any point in their district of operation within minutes.

  • THE EVP SOUND SCOPE - The EVP Sound Scope is an audio processing device carried by OCI personnel which scans and isolates electronic voice phenomenon (the non-fictional way ghosts allegedly are speaking to the living).

  • THE CONTAINMENT GUN - The Containment Gun is a device designed to send a small burst of electro-magnetism that charges bio-ethereal energy and draws it into a containment matrix. A Containment Gun captures and imprisons ghosts.

  • THE SONIC-SPHERE CONSOLE - The Sonic-Sphere Console is a computer system that allows its forensic technician to manipulate sonic evidence from ghosts, including hacking into an actual ghost waveform.

  • THE PURGE TASER - The Purge Taser is a non-lethal, yet violent electric shock system designed to exorcise Avatar Geists from their possessed bodies.

  • THE REAPER - The Reaper is a nickname to a bio-ethereal purge and containment chamber developed by Geist Technologies for the U.S. prison system. The first prototype, named BPCC46, was installed in an administrative maximum prison in New Alexandria, ADX Potomac Correctional Center, where it replaced the gas chamber and changed the meaning and implications of capital punishment. It also changed the entire prison system for the ADX Potomac Correctional Center, creating much controversy nation-wide. The ADX Potomac Correctional Center agreed to participate in the probationary period of the experimental department of the OCI. The warden of the ADX Potomac Correctional Center is against the use of the BPCC46, as its implications threatens to breakdown his authority over the living prisoners.

Trivia

  • This project originally began as a reinvention of the classic radio drama The Shadow. However, when series creator Xander Davis decided to use EVP as a plot device, tying into the audio theatre medium itself, he ended up creating a new intellectual property entirely and continued developing it further from there.

  • The "Black Omen Club" from Soul Rift Episode 01 was named after "the Black Omen" from the Squaresoft (now Square-Enix) RPG "Chrono Trigger," of which Davis is an avid fan. It is a reference to a quest for immortality.

  • Soul Rift was conceived in January 2007.
